Annie Thompson

An award-winning Canadian fashion designer, President and CEO of Annie Thompson Inc. Born in Labrador and now living between Wasaga Beach and Toronto, Ontario, Thompson has been creating notably unique womenswear for more than 30 years under her eponymous label. Thompson can boast a near cult-like following since 1981 when she opened her first studio having graduated from Ryerson University’s Fashion Design program and Fine Art Studies at University of Windsor. Annie Thompson is a hybrid blend of artist and clothing designer whose work and designs often blur the boundaries between street-wear and ceremonial wear and defy pigeon-holing. An independent designer in the world of fashion, she has produced innumerable signature collections for her Queen West boutique and notable other locations including her most recent studio/boutique in Toronto’s west end.

Thompson’s collections are made with concern for the earth. She is passionate about creating as small a carbon footprint as possible and does so by producing locally and paying fair Canadian wages instead of the offshore alternative, re-cycling most everything, using up-cycled and organic fabrics, inherently producing long-lasting style and utilitarianism not to end up in the destructive heap of fast fashion landfill.
Thompson has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including a coveted Fashion Canada grant while at Ryerson U), The Evelyn Dollery Award for outstanding design, honored as Woman of the Year in Peterborough, Ont., Best Designer on Queen Street – three years in a row, one of Canada’s top designers to be invited on a trade mission to Japan with The Canadian Apparel Federation and a stalwart in the One of a Kind Show’s ‘Hall of Fame’.

Thompson connects with her clientele through hands on hosting of trunk shows throughout Canada and the US. Her designs are coveted and considered collectable, functional works of art. Thompson’s true love of travel and connecting with people through art and all things culturally diverse lead her to embark upon a five year textile art project in Kolkata, India, including volunteer teachings, workshop facilitations and supporting local craftspeople through collaborative product design.

Annie Thompson has also been recognized for her sculptural textile installations exhibited at The Art Gallery of Ontario, the New York City Design Centre and in Dubai, UAE, amongst others. Thompson has been invited to exhibit her ‘Sculptural Fashion’ show in Doha, Qatar 2015, and her textile art installation works in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, SA, in 2016. Thompson recently unveiled her multi-media, five year project and solo textile art exhibition in Kolkata, India.
